Australia Doubles Number of Scholarships to Asia-Pacific RegionThe Australian Government will provide nearly A$1.4 billion over 5 years to support education cooperation in the Asia-Pacific Region from July 2006. Australian scholarships brings together under the one umbrella an expanded Endeavour scholarship programme offered by the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and the Australian Development Scholarships currently offered by AusAid, as well as introducing a new AusAid managed programme - Australian Leadership Awards. Angliss Culinary Academy Official OpeningThe Angliss Culinary Academy was officially opened on Friday 30 June by
the Hon. Gary Hardgrave, Minister for Vocational and Technical Education.
The Academy has the capacity to train an additional 450-600 chefs, cooks and
patissiers annually. The construction of a new state-of-the-art training
facility provides the Academy with vitally-needed additional kitchens,
increasing its capacity to deliver training and provide skilled graduates to
meet the current shortfall of skilled culinary professionals. Second Meeting of the National Industry Skills CommitteeThe second meeting of the National Industry Skills Committee (NISC) took
place on 8th June in Melbourne. Members agreed to begin consideration of
projects they wished to build into the 2007 Work Plan in order for it to be
presented to Ministers prior to the start of the new year. Further
information is available through the NISC Communique Changes to Vocational and Technical Education from 1 JulyOn 30 June Gary Hardgrave, Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, announced changes to the government’s incentives for apprenticeships. These included a re-naming of New Apprenticeships to Australian Apprenticeships and expansion of the scheme. For the new contract period 2006 – 2009 regional coverage will be expanded. Australian Support Centres will give greater focus to early intervention and ongoing support, retention and completion, linkages, key priority groups, and marketing. AACs will facilitate placements by becoming a Job Placement Licensed Organisation for establishing formal linkages. The forums will highlight the wide range of successful examples of Recognition of Prior Learning around the nation and will use these examples as the platform for participants building their capabilities in RPL.
