2007 TAFE CONVENTION – ‘REFRAME’ LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

The release of TAFE Directions: Balancing Tertiary Education – The TDA 2007 Election Manifesto prompted national media attention and attention to TAFE, during this week’s TAFE Directors Australia 2007 National Convention, staged in Melbourne.

The Prime Minister, Vocational & Further Education Minister and Labor’s Training Shadow Minister all made contributions, while the Business Tertiary Roundtable included ACTU President and BHERT president and Skills Tasmania Chair contributions - -leading to a commendation for the Roundtable by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Convention lived up to its theme ‘Reframe, Refresh, Fresh Start’

PM’s MESSAGE TO TDA CONVENTION DELEGATES

The Prime Minister, the Hon. John Howard MP, sent a special message to the 2007 Convention, advocating greater linkages between courses, campuses and skills of TAFE Institutes and universities.

The PM’s message on linkages made national headlines, and included the statement: “I see a future where vocational and university campuses could sit side by side, with flexibility for students to move between them to access the mix of courses and skills that they need.”

MINISTER ROBB – ADVANCES PLAN ON TAFE REFORM

In his keynote speech, the Minister for Vocational and Further Education, the Hon. Andrew Robb AO MP, announced that funding for TAFE in next year’s Commonwealth-State VET funding agreement would be tied to the States undertaking autonomy of TAFE, however did not reveal full details.

The Minister said: “Our continued involvement with the States will be contingent on the States delivering autonomy to TAFEs - autonomy at least equal with universities.”

SHADOW MINISTER SUPPORTS GREATER INDEPENDENCE FOR TAFE

The Shadow Minister for Education and Training, Stephen Smith MP, supported the need for TAFE decision-making to be devolved to local institutions in order to provide early warning of skills needs.

He foreshadowed further announcements on TAFE funding to be made during the course of the upcoming election campaign.

He called for further investment into education and committed to increasing Year 12 completion rates.

VICTORIAN TAFE SYSTEM SET FOR REVIEW

Victorian Minister for Skills and Workforce Participation, the Hon. Jacinta Allan MP, officially opened the Convention and announced reviews of the State’s TAFE system.
