HOLMESGLEN INSTITUTE OF TAFE – OFFICIAL TRAINING PROVIDER OF THE MELBOURNE 2006 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games (M2006) organising committee announced in early 2005 that Holmesglen Institute of TAFE was its official training provider. Holmesglen Institute of TAFE was responsible for training the taskforce of volunteers, as well as members of the M2006 staff.

Holmesglen was selected as the M2006 official training provider after a long and in-depth selection process. Holmesglen had proposed an innovative solution to M2006’s training needs, embedding a Project Team Manager at the M2006 office to identify training needs and to promote cross communication between the two organisations. An online training strategy was put in place to support its face-to-face training.

Part of Holmesglen’s involvement in the Games included hosting a ‘workforce warm up’ event , a large-scale event involving the entire Games workforce to set the tone and high-spirited atmosphere of the Games. This very successful event was held in December 2005 and brought the entire workforce together with the aim to excite and motivate the participants.

Holmesglen’s activities associated with the Commonwealth Games involve training, support material development, e-learning application, web design and development as well as mentoring.

Over 600 training sessions were held in early 2006 by Holmesglen Institute of TAFE, Official Training Partner for the Games, to cater for the myriad roles and venues that were active during the Games. Due to the complexity involved in trying to accommodate the preferences of almost 15,000 individuals, all volunteers had to be open minded about the roles and locations that they have been asked to fulfil.

Currently, Holmesglen with its partner, EFI is undertaking training in Doha, Qatar

of volunteers for the Asian Games to be held in Doha in December 2006.

In January 2006, Holmesglen completed training of volunteers for the South West Asian Games.

The intellectual property that the Institute has built up in relation to large scale training programs will be of great benefit in regard to other international projects.
