'TAFE MEETS PARLIAMENT' - SKILLS INNOVATION 2020 LAUNCHTAFE Directors celebrate the 10th anniversary of TDA with a special 2-day Skills Innovation 2020 conference, and Parliamentary Dinner 16-17 September 2008. The Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, has confirmed she will deliver the Mick Young Oration 2008, at a special Parliamentary Dinner on Tuesday 16 September at Old Parliament House, on her vision of the Government's social inclusion and skills mission. Peak bodies, TAFE supplier companies and key VET stakeholders will be invited to book tables for the Parliamentary Dinner, with proceeds to support two Mick Young Scholarship TAFE students for international study and a work placement in 2009. NEW TRAINING INSTITUTE FOR INDIGENOUS YOUTHDeputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP has announced a $6.75m Federal Government contribution towards the establishment of the Australian Institute for Indigenous Learning and Skills Development. The new institute is designed to support the Government's commitment to halving the education and employment gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. UP-SKILLING AT RISK UNDER PRODUCTIVITY PLACES PROGRAMTDA has warned that the Federal Government's $1.9B Productivity Places Program has so far allocated more places to low-key training activity, with key skill shortage areas receiving little funding, and with large numbers of TAFE Institutes barred from the PPP Scheme. The Chair of TDA, Deb Daly, and Martin Riordan, CEO, met with DEEWR officials in Canberra last week, and earlier in Sydney, TDA CEOs discussed the issues with representatives of Australia's 11 Industry Skill Councils, and are due to resume meetings again 7 August, to discuss concerns. TAFE Institutes compete against private providers for the places available under the program. There is a concern that the funding is directed to cheaper training areas such as security, retailing and hairdressing rather than high cost courses such as technology and engineering-related areas, most likely offered at TAFE. TDA Chief Executive, Martin Riordan was quoted in The Australian, saying: "The program needs to be halted until these issues are addressed, otherwise there will be vast amounts of money spent on low-skilled occupational areas." Mr Riordan said TDA has also taken up the issue with the COAG productivity taskforce, which is due to meet DEEWR leadership this week. To read more, click here. AUSTRALIAN VET DELEGATION TAKES A BITE OF THE QS APPLESenior representatives from TDA and the Australian Council for Private Education and Training participated in the 4th QS Asia Pacific Professional Leaders in Education Conference (QS APPLE), in Seoul, South Korea, 9-11 July. Australian VET delegates took part in panel discussions and delivered presentations on a range of topics including new workforce futures, the internationalisation of Australian VET, the role of private education in Australia and VET partnership models. BUILDING THE NT SKILLED WORKFORCENorthern Territory Chief Minister, the Hon. Paul Henderson said the State Government will invest a further $10m over the next four years to continue to build the Northern Territory's skilled workforce. The investment will focus on training more apprentices and trainees, getting students ready for the workforce, more skills for Territory workers and a stronger workforce in the region. To read Minister Henderson's media release, click here. SOUTH AUSTRALIA WORKS ON SKILLING UNEMPLOYEDSouth Australian Minister for Employment, Training and Further Education, the Hon. Paul Caica announced that 17 South Australian regions will receive over $14m over the next year under 'South Australia Works', the program that skills unemployed people in areas of local industry demand. "Over 29,000 South Australians will participate in these South Australia Works initiatives over the next year. Of these almost 16,000 will participate in work programs and almost 14,000 will participate in learning, skills development and training programs," Mr Caica said. One of the features of the latest program is a mix of employment, academic and vocational education, occupational skills, job ready skills and on-the-job training. SUBMISSIONS FOR THE REVIEW OF DEEWR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION GROUPA reminder that member's comments and contributions are welcomed for the TDA submission to the review of DEEWR International Education Group and Offshore network being conducted by Erebus International. This is an opportunity for TDA members to present comments about past experiences and ideas for future directions. Submission must be emailed to Rebecca Biazos, by 30 July. NATIONAL STEERING GROUP ON TRANSNATIONAL EDUCATIONMember institutes are invited to nominate to join TDA's National Steering Group to guide development of curricula and a suite of industry focused professional development seminars/workshops in transnational education good practice. The project is funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace relations (DEEWR) and managed by the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA). The theme is Youth Employment/Unemployment: The Role of Vocational-Technical Education. The Manager, Education Sector, World Bank, Robin Horn, will be the keynote speaker for the conference.
