Philip Clark AM, Chair, Higher Education Endowment Fund Advisory Board, has confirmed as a keynote speaker at the TAFE MEETS Parliament: Skills Innovation 2020 forum in Canberra. TDA had been active pre-Budget 2008 with its 'Australian e-TAFE' new technologies platform for capital investment focus for TAFE Institutes. TDA will host the TAFE Meets Parliament: Skills Innovation 2020 forum, which will be held 16-17 September in Canberra. The forum is designed as both an engagement and a network opportunity for Australia's TAFE institute leaders and partners. On the Tuesday evening of the two day event, Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, will deliver the 2008 Mick Young Oration at a 10th Anniversary TDA Parliamentary Dinner (Old Parliament House, 6 for 7.00pm, Tues 16 September). Peak bodies and VET stakeholders are invited to book a table. The event will raise funds to send two Mick Young Scholarship Trust students overseas to extend their study and undertake a work placement. TAFE NSW CONTRIBUTES $196 BILLION OVER TWENTY YEARS TO STATE ECONOMYTAFE NSW contributed an estimated $196B over 20 years to the State economy, according to data released by Deputy Director General of TAFE NSW, Marie Persson. The finding was contained in the TAFE NSW economic impact data released last week to the Institutes of Technology Polytechnics New Zealand, at their Annual Conference in Wellington, NZ. Marie will also be addressing a special TAFE MEETS PARLIAMENT Productivity Roundtable, (Day 1, Tues 16th Sept) at next month's TDA event in Canberra. For the international TAFE officials' conference, a senior visiting Canadian Community College consultant will provide detail on how Canada tracks the sector's economic contribution to the community and the economy. TDA DEPUTY CHAIR & SWAN TAFE CEO PRESENTS AT NCVER FORUMSWAN TAFE Managing Director and TDA Deputy Chair Wayne Collyer presented at the recent NCVER forum 'Apprenticeships: Sustaining Australia's skills base' in Melbourne. He outlined the 'Transforming Trade Training' project initiated by SWAN TAFE and funded by the Western Australian Department of Education and Training. The NCVER forum brought together industry stakeholders from around the country to debate strategies on current apprenticeship issues impacting skills shortages. To view an information sheet on Wayne's presentation click here. TRADES AND SKILLS TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARDSThe 2008 Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year Awards are open for nominations. A total of $5k will be awarded to the winners in eight categories including automotive, building and construction, electrical, hospitality/personal services, manufacturing, metals/engineering, mineral resources and rural/farming. DECREASE IN TRADE VACANCIESThe Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations has released the August 2008 Vacancy Report. The report shows an overall decrease in vacancies of 1.7% for the month of August and decrease of 11.4% since August 2007. Vacancies also fell for the trades, down 2.3%. MINISTER O'CONNOR URGES BETTER WORKING RELATIONSHIPS TO HELP SKILLS CRISISMinister for Employment participation, the Hon Brendan O'Connor MP, spoke at the SkillsDMC National Conference themed 'Tomorrow's Workforce for Tomorrow's Workplace' last week.
