PRIME MINISTER CONGRATULATES TDA ON DISCUSSION PAPER
   

The Prime Minister, the Hon. John Howard MP, issued a special congratulatory message on reforms proposed by TAFE Directors, to launch the 2006 National Conference in Adelaide. Read the Prime Minister’s Message.

The Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Kim Beazley MP, delivered the inaugural Mick Young Oration, as patron of the Mick Young Scholarship Trust, listing key new commitments to support the role of TAFE as the leading provider for national skilling.

And Senator the Hon. Amanda Vanstone provided a Keynote Ministerial Address to the Conference, indicating her desire to see wider advocacy by TAFE on the opportunities for vocation education in Australia.


2006 NATIONAL CONFERENCE communiquÉ

A National Conference Communiqué was issued after TAFE Directors agreed to launch a National TAFE Action Agenda, in early 2007 ahead of the COAG meeting on skills reform.   

A significant response across the VTE sector, TAFE colleges and institutes, and key industry partners saw wide participation in the Conference. Speaker presentations will be available on the TDA website later this week.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST -- $837 million Australian Skills Vouchers Program

TAFE Institutes were required to respond to Expressions of Interest to participate in the Australian Government skills voucher campaign.

THE WINNER IS …….. LARGE PROVIDER OF THE YEAR 2006 – BREMER INSTITUTE OF TAFE (QLD)

Congratulations go to Bremer Institute of TAFE for its leadership in community training, delivering a win as Large Provider of the Year 2006. Bremer Institute assisted TDA in 2005-06 to conclude preparation of the National TAFE Indigenous Charter, due for release for the 2007 academic year.

ISC FORUM VISITS TAFE REGENCY INTERNATIONAL CENTRE

Leadership from Australia’s 10 Industry Skills Councils met at Regency International Centre, Adelaide, to coincide with the TAFE Directors Australia National Conference, last week in Adelaide. The ISC Forum Meeting was held 12 months after the ISC – Providers Protocols Agreement.

The Innovation and Business Skills Council has also sought feedback on changes to a training package for VTE teaching. Link is ---

The Department of Finance and Administration (Finance) is seeking to appoint a Higher Education Provider(s) to deliver Postgraduate and Undergraduate courses of study as part of the Finance Postgraduate and Finance Career Starters’ Undergraduate Study Programs.

As part of the Postgraduate Program, Finance requires the delivery of mandatory and elective courses in the discipline of management for progressive qualifications at the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master and MBA level. The criteria will be jointly developed and agreed by Finance and the Service Provider.

Australia-Thailand Institute - Grant Applications

On 29 June 2005 the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Alexander Downer MP announced the establishment of the Australia-Thailand Institute (ATI). The purpose of the ATI is to further promote bilateral relations with Thailand and to expand institutional, cultural and people-to-people links.

The Australia-Thailand Institute provides financial support to selected projects which aim to build community links between Australia and Thailand, particularly with regard to:

  • public policy (including legal issues and education)
  • health and science
  • culture and the arts

The Executive Committee of the ATI is now calling for funding applications. The closing date for applications for this funding round is Friday 1 December 2006. A further call for funding applications is expected in early 2007.  Further details are provided on: http://www.dfat.gov.au/ati/.
