DEPUTY PM INTRODUCES SKILLS AUSTRALIA BILL - AND MEETS
TDA!
TDA was welcomed to Parliament House last week by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP.
Minister Gillard hosted Deb Daly (Chair), and Martin Riordan (CEO), to a meeting on TAFE and new
legislation. Also attending was Wayne Collyer (Deputy Chair, CEO Swan TAFE) who hosted the Minister to view Perth's southern suburb's Swan TAFE, during November 2007.

The Parliament House meeting - on the first day of the new Parliament - was a great honour, and signals the opportunity for TAFE to re-connect with the Australian Government as it looks to greater workforce participation.
TDA appreciated the chance for a direct briefing on key legislation from the Deputy PM, given the role of TAFE Institutes to provide training in the marketplace. The Deputy PM also discussed the changing role of ATCs, FEE HELP legislation and TAFE working to enhance the new 450,000 additional training places pledged by the in coming Government.
The Deputy PM specifically briefed TDA on the introduction of the Skills Australia Bill. Skills Australia is the statutory body that will be the centrepiece of skills policy development. Click here to view the

US RESEARCH ON ATTRACTING HIGHER LEVEL ADULT SKILLS
New research on adult learning has been released from the United States Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration and the Office of Policy Development and Research by Jobs for the Future, in collaboration with Eduventures and FutureWorks.

TAFE FLIES THE FLAG AT WORLD CONGRESS
The World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics, in partnership with the International Association of Community and Further Education Colleges Congress, is hosting the 2008 World Congress and International Association of Colleges Conference, in New York 18-20 February.
Australian TAFEs are well represented at the event with presentations from Box Hill Institute and Northern Melbourne institute of TAFE as well as the University of Newcastle. TAFE Directors Australia holds a position on the international board of the World Federation of colleges and Polytechnics and will take part in the Annual General Meeting of the Board on 18 February.

INVITATION TO CONTRIBUTE - INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SKILLS NEEDS
The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations has commissioned the International Education Association of Australia, in partnership with TAFE Directors Australia and ACPET, to scope the business skills needs for the VET sector in international markets and to develop a range of professional development programs to meet these needs.
Institutions are invited to contribute to this project through completing a short survey
(see attached). The result will be the development and delivery of tailored seminars to meet the VET sector's needs in broadening and sustaining international engagement.

ISC VALIDATION WORKSHOPS
The Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council is holding national workshops to validate two draft units of competency reports.
The first report includes the development of competencies for assistant level workers in community rehabilitation. The second report is related to chronic disease self management principles for community services and health.

ITSE - SKILLS ONE ULTIMATE APPRENTICESHIP WINNERS
SkillsOne, an initiative of The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence will soon send the three winners of its Ultimate Apprenticeship competition to England, Japan and Singapore to gain international work experience in the automotive, cookery and horticulture trades.
The competition rewards those undertaking an apprenticeship in trade skills and serves as a reminder that an apprenticeship offers endless career opportunities.
