Careers -- CAA Partnership at work Conference 30 Aug – 1 Sept 2006

The National conference was attended by in excess of 800 representatives from industry, community organisations and government. The event was co-ordinated by Department of Science, Employment and Training (DEST).

TDA wishes to thank Kathryn Crisp, the Director from Trade and Technician Skills Institute, Qld, who represented TAFE Directors Australia.

Kathryn reported that the conference focused on how as a system we can increase our effectiveness in supporting the 13 – 19 year old cohort transition from school to work. There were robust discussions around industry engagement, communication strategies and the Australian Blue Print for Career Development. Many success stories were shared.

Further discussions are planned to take place between TDA and DEST to develop a partnership strategy improving the connection between the state, territory and federal systems.

Kathryn added: “One message was clear – communities working better together will maximise the outcomes we can collectively achieve as a system for the 13 – 19 year old cohort.”

Bologna & Qualifications Recognition
Minister Bishop Chairs ANU Conference

On Thursday 7th November 2006, Australian Education International conducted a one day seminar concerning the Bologna Process -- aiming to rationalize the European Higher Education Systems by creating:

  • a 3 cycle degree program of 3 to 4 year Bachelors, 2 or 1 year Masters Degree and 3 year Phd program,
  • a voluntary consistent quality assurance system throughout European institutes, and
  • a diploma supplement to describe the outcomes of course better for employers or for credit transfer.

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon. Julie Minster Bishop MP, opened the seminar.

Minister Bishop announced a $400 000 project to develop a diploma supplement template and investigate changes required to university information systems and administration. TDA is investigating its application to the TAFE Sector.

Further details of the Bologna process have been provided on the DEST website: http://www.dest.gov.au/sectors/international_education/default.htm.

Comments about the implications for this or the parallel Copenhagen Program for the European VET sector are welcome -- Please email: Peter.Robinson@tda.edu.au.
