REGISTRATIONS NOW OPEN -
FUTURE DIRECTIONS IN VOCATIONAL SKILLS FOR YOUTH NATIONAL FORUM & WORKSHOP
This National Forum is a special joint venture between TAFE Directors Australia, representing TAFE institutes, and the Australian College of Educators, representing secondary schools. The Forum, to be held 16 April in Hobart, will workshop issues relating to the skill development of young people at the interface between schools and TAFE, and discuss Rudd Government policies.
The Minister for Employment Participation, the Hon. Brendan O'Connor MP, will deliver the keynote address and Rebecca Cross, from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, will follow up with the implementation strategies of Government.
The Forum is being staged before the first round of Trade Training in School applications, due May 2008, and all TAFE Institutes are recommended to attend.

TDA MEETS WITH THE HON BRENDAN O'CONNOR MP
Creating employment participation opportunities for younger and mature aged Australians will be a priority for the Hon. Brendan O'Connor MP, Minister for Employment Participation. Mr. O'Connor met with TDA executives Martin Riordan and Pam Caven, and Dr. Colin Adrian (CEO, CIT Canberra) at Parliament House last week.
Mr. O'Connor will launch the 'Future Directions in Vocational Skills for Youth National Forum and Workshop', in Hobart, 16 April. Among other matters discussed at the meeting was TAFE's role in seeking solutions to re-connect with those disengaged from study and the workforce.
Registrations are now open for the Forum.
TDA HOSTS SENIOR SAUDI ARABIAN VET REPRESENTATIVES
Four senior representatives from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Technical and Vocational Training Corporation are visiting Australia from 9-15 March 2008.
TDA CEO, Martin Riordan, will meet the delegation on its first day of meetings and provide an overview of the Australian TAFE system. A number of TDA member institutes will also host the delegation over the coming week.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS - REVIEW OF NATIONAL INNOVATION SYSTEM
The panel for the Review of the National Innovation System has released a call for submissions
report. The review will look at:
- Better ways to deliver public and community services
- Mobilising innovative capabilities for national challenges including climate change, population health and energy needs
- Promoting fresh ideas and risk-taking
- Supporting the diffusion and uptake of new technologies and innovations across industry and communities
TDA will be making a submission to the review based around its White Paper to COAG titled:
'Investing in Productivity; Engaging TAFE to accelerate Workforce Development and Job
Participation', and TDA's joint communiqué with 10 Industry Skills Councils:
'Skilling Australia'.

NCVER RELEASES LATEST VET STATISTICS
The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has released the
Australian vocational education and training statistics: Apprentices and trainees, September 2007
report.
The September 2007 figures for the number of people undertaking a 'traditional apprenticeship' increased by 9% compared to September 2007.

LAST WEEK OF CSHISC VALIDATION SESSIONS
The last of the national validation sessions for the Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council's
CHC02 Community Services Training Package Review (Draft
2) will be in Sydney and Canberra this week. An invitation has been extended to industry stakeholders to attend and give feedback on behalf of their state and their industry sectors.
