“VETASSESS” -- NEW MIGRATION SKILLS ASSESSMENT SERVICE

A new website has been launched for the Australian Government Offshore Assessment Centres -- operated by the successful consortia of Victorian and Western Australian TAFE Institutes.

Trades Recognition Australia announced the new skills assessment services in July after a tender process -- called “VETASSESS”.

VETASSESS includes: Kangan Batman TAFE, Box Hill TAFE, Great Southern TAFE, Victoria University, Swan TAFE, Great Southern TAFE, South West Regional College and Central Gippsland TAFE.

The new arrangements apply from 1st September 2007, for migrants from India, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom, South Africa and the Philippines, across nine trades including electrician, cable jointer, electrical powerlines tradesperson, plumber, refrigeration mechanic, joiner, carpenter, motor mechanic and bricklayer.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR TRADE TEACHER AWARDS

The Institute for Trades Skills Excellence has opened nominations for the inaugural Trade Teacher of the Year Awards, to be held 8 November in Hobart.

The awards offer recognition for teachers who have shown inspiration and innovation in eight areas including: Automotive, Building & Construction, Electrical, Hospitality & Personal Services, Manufacturing, Metals & Engineering, Mineral Resources and Rural & Farming.

There are 23 prizes of $10,000 each to be presented to winners across the eight categories as well as the judging of the overall Australian Trade Teacher of the Year Award.

SEMINAR OUTLINES VICTORIA’S SKILLS STORE INITIATIVE

A VISTA seminar on 26 July outlined the Victorian Government’s Skills Store Initiative, a part of the Victorian Skills Statement that will see 13 Skills Stores set up across Victoria.

The Skills Stores, to be located in public venues such as shopfronts, will provide information about training options and recognition of existing skills to mature aged workers, young people and industry.

Funding for the Skills Stores will total $23.46 million over four years. The first five Skills Stores opened in July 2007. The next four Skills Stores will be open for tender in August 2007.

ALERT -- TAFE REPRESENTATIVES REQUESTED FOR AEI SYMPOSIUM

TAFE executives across each Australian state and territory are invited to attend the English Language Competence of International Students – A National Symposium in Sydney, 14 August 2007.

One TAFE member institution representative is being allocated for each of WA, NT and Tasmania, and two representatives for each of ACT, SA, VIC, NSW and QLD are still required.
