TRADE DIPLOMA - KEY PROPOSAL FOR 2006 NATIONAL CONFERENCE

A proposal to extend 2-year Trade Diploma courses from international to domestic students - across into trade skills qualifications - will be a key agenda of the 2006 National Conference next week in Adelaide.

And a dedicated session on funding options for TAFE will be featured.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST -- $837 million Australian Skills Vouchers Program

TAFE Institutes will be sent invitations later this week to make Expressions of Interest in the Australian Government skills voucher campaign.

Effective 01 January 2007, Work Skills Vouchers [worth[m1] up to $3000 will be available to Australians aged 25 and over who do not have Year 12 or a Certificate II level qualification. The vouchers will assist recipients currently in the workforce or looking for work to improve their basic skills by undertaking:

  • A year 12 or equivalent course
  • Vocational Certificate 11 courses
  • Accredited literacy/numeracy courses.

Business Skills Vouchers will provide vouchers of up to $500 to apprentices in traditional trades who are in their third or fourth year of their apprenticeship or those apprentices who have completed their trade in the last two years to undertake business skills training to assist participants to become self-employed or to run their own small business. These vouchers can be used to purchase training in units within the Business Services Training Package or other approved business course, for example, from the Financial Services or Information and Communications Technology training Packages.

The scheme is part of the 12 October 2006 announcement by the Prime Minister, detailing: 

  • Work Skills Vouchers                                       $408m
  • Support for Mid-Career Apprentices                 $307m 
  • Business Skills Vouchers for Apprentices         $12m
  • More Engineering Places at University             $56m
  • Incentives for Higher Technical Skills              $54m

DEST will email all Registered Training Organizations at their NTIS address later this week seeking expressions of interest to offer programs.

Contracted providers will be paid to assess eligibility of applicants, and paid on confirmation of enrolment fees up to the value of the voucher[m2] .]


CHINESE MINISTER COUNSELLOR – OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL SEGMENT

H.E. Madam ZHU Xiaoyu, Minister Counsellor for Education, Embassy of P.R. China in Australia, will officially launch the International segment of the 2006 TDA Conference.

The Conference features the new Australia-China Dialogue – with private and public sector projects showcased during the Adelaide event.

POD CAST -- FEATURE FOR LEADER’S KEYNOTE SPEECHES

The Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Kim Beazley MP, will open the 2006 National Conference program with the launch of the inaugural Mick Young Oration, in support of the Mick Young Scholarship Trust – This will begin at 6.00pm with cocktails, Monday evening 13 November 2006.

Senator the Hon. Amanda Vanstone, Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, will make a Ministerial Keynote Address on Wednesday 15 November 2006.

Pod cast technologies will record the sessions, and illustrate new learning ICT available for TAFE Institutes.


NEW MEDIA AUSTRALIA-WIDE RESPONSE

A massive Australia-wide response from TAFE college and institute students will create wide interest in the inaugural New Media Showcase, at the 2006 Conference.

A special screening of the ‘best of the best’ will take place along with a TAFE SA Student Fashion Show, over wine and cheese on Tuesday evening, 14 Nov 2006, at the TAFE SA Arts Centre.
