Queensland launches new entitlement ‘voucher’ system for vocational training

The Queensland Government’s “Great skills: Real Opportunities” five-year plan for the vocational training sector has come into effect.

The Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek says the plan is an “adrenalin shot” for the training industry, making training more accessible and ensuring it is cost effective and in-line with industry needs.

“We’ve introduced the ‘Certificate 3 Guarantee’ to give more Queenslanders the chance to gain a government funded Certificate III qualification.

“Under the Guarantee, selected registered training organisations will compete for an additional $42 million in contestable funding this financial year.  It will also give Queenslanders access to government subsidised training for their first Certificate III level qualification in priority skill areas.”

TasTAFE kicks off

There was also a new complexion to vocational training in Tasmania with the official start of TasTAFE, as a statutory authority.

The Minister for Education and Skills, Nick McKim, launched TasTAFE at Burnie campus, saying the organisation would build on the strengths of the Tasmanian Polytechnic and the Tasmanian Skills Institute to provide a great range of options and pathways for Tasmanians to gain vocational skills.

"Throughout the TasTAFE transition, feedback from a wide range of stakeholders has been sought to ensure that TasTAFE is firmly established as an organisation that meets the needs of the community it serves. It will be responsive to both industry and individuals and will result in quality training, improved outcomes and ease of access for learners and employers."

Total VET activity reporting – amended standards for RTOs

Following its November 2012 decision to mandate reporting of VET activity for all RTOs, the Standing Council on Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment on 7 June endorsed the standards and policy to underpin the implementation of the new reporting requirements from 1 January 2014.

From 1 January 2014, RTOs must collect and report full AVETMISS data, in accordance with the National VET Provider Collection Data Requirements Policy. The standards for RTOs (both the Data Provision Requirements as part of the NVR VET Quality Framework, and the Australian Quality Training Framework) have now been amended to reflect the changes to reporting requirements.
