Federal government launches AsiaBound program – Henry Report response

The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, Senator the Hon. Chris Evans, has launched a new program to encourage tertiary students to consider an educational exchange in Asia.

The $37 million AsiaBound Study Grants Program offers Australian university and VET students $2000 and $5000 for short or long-term study in an Asian country.

An extra $1000 grant is offered for students who undertake an Asian language study as part of their exchange. The AsiaBound program will commence in 2014 and applications will be open in the first half of 2013.

Today, the Australian Financial Review featured skills training in its Education Feature, reporting on TDA’s concern that the Henry Report’s focus on education had ignored the major issue of skills and training.

The AFR noted the initiatives of TAFE institutes with dual qualifications and curriculum support in China and regional markets, and TDA being commissioned to host a TVET provider forum in Melbourne this month, for the 18-nation members of the East Asia Summit. Click here to read the AFR report.

TDA Chief Executive, Martin Riordan, last week responded in a letter to AFR, arguing that technical education will be a vital pillar in Australia’s relationship with Asia. Click here to read the letter.

NSW gives transport concessions to international students

Following industry representations, the NSW Government has announced transport concessions to international students.

The reforms provide the students a 35% discount on public transport fares.

The concessions were granted in response to recommendations made in the NSW Government International Education and Research Taskforce report, despite the State’s long-history of refusing to offer travel concessions to international students.

An article in The Australian noted that students will be required to buy quarterly or yearly tickets to benefit from the scheme.

Transport concessions for international students are currently available in all states, with the exception of Victoria.

Victoria launches Trade Experience Pilot Program

Victorian Higher Education and Skills Minister, the Hon Peter Hall, has launched a new Trade Experience Pilot Program, giving early school leavers an opportunity to sample various trades, while still maintaining studies in numeracy and literacy.

The pilot program covers career development, health and wellbeing, hospitality, technology, and taster courses in traditional trades including carpentry, plumbing and bricklaying.

The first group started their course in July this year at Victoria University’s Harvester Technical College. Kangan and Chisholm TAFEs will join Victoria University in 2013.

Invitation to be a part of the National Student Services Partnership Group

A TAFE representative is invited to participate in the National Student Services Partnership Group (NSSPG) meeting.

The next meeting is on 6th December from 2-4pm via video conference, which can be viewed from your nearest Department of Human Services site in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra, or via telephone in other locations.

The Partnership Group will:

  • provide a focus for educational institutions, student bodies, parent organisations, community agencies and other interested parties;
  • promote ideas and opportunities for partnerships between members and other relevant government, educational, student, community and business groups; and
  • establish working groups to progress specific issues as required.

The Partnership Group will achieve this by providing feedback on:

  • the quality, effectiveness and consistency of the department's service delivery arrangements for students; and
  • the development and improvement of customer service standards, practices and new initiatives for student customers, including identification of best practice.
