Challenger Institute CEO awarded

Challenger Institute of Technology CEO, Liz Harris, (pictured) has received a prestigious national award for outstanding public service.

Ms Harris, of Cottesloe, was among just three Western Australian public servants to receive a Public Service Medal in the 2014 Australia Day Honours List.

Challenger Institute Governing Council chair Paddi Creevey said Ms Harris’ medal was testament to her strong and inspirational leadership of Challenger Institute, and a worthy acknowledgement of her commitment to the public training sector.

TDA congratulates Liz Harris, who led initiatives for last year’s TAFE leadership and CEO mentoring ahead of the National Conference in Brisbane.

Community services and health reforms under watch

The Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council (CS&HISC) says it is pleased with the latest attention being focussed on care and support services but says it will be following closely the discussions on proposed changes.

It says over recent months there have been government calls to reform the health model; a re-opening of discussion on aged care and disability delivery; and a planned Productivity Commission review of early childhood services.

In its latest newsletter, the CEO of CS&HISC, Rod Cooke says training continues to be a contentious issue, particularly in aged care and children’s services.

“As sectors with high workforce needs, there has been significant failure in training quality as workers are fast-tracked into the system. We believe there are solutions to training quality that require a commitment from everyone: RTOs, employers, regulators, learners and us, as the developers of the VET qualifications,” he said.

23rd VET ‘No Frills’ conference call for papers

A ‘call for papers’ has been issued for the 23rd National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference 'No Frills', in Melbourne, 9-11 July.

If you have research on vocational education and training (VET) to share, then this is the place to present your findings.

Sponsored jointly by NCVER and Holmesglen, practitioners and researchers, especially early career VET researchers or those new to the VET sector, are invited to share their research and knowledge at this year’s conference.

Organisers are looking for informative, relevant and thought-provoking presentations on a wide range of VET related research in progress, as well as completed work.

The call for papers closes 11 March. Registration to attend will open in March.

See here for abstract requirements and submission details.

For further information about the call for papers, please email laura.oconnor@ncver.edu.au. For any other enquiries relating to ‘No Frills’, please email events@ncver.edu.au
