VET student identifier bill introduced

The federal government has introduced legislation to establish a national life-long, unique identifier for vocational education and training (VET) students.

The Student Identifiers Bill was introduced by the Minister for Education, Sussan Ley, who said that current information about VET enrolments, participation and completion was fragmented and inaccurate.

Individuals will have control over their student identifier and can determine who can have access to their personal and educational records.

A new Student Identifiers Registrar will ensure the protection and appropriate use of information.

Kevin Harris steps down from Northern Sydney Institute

Last week saw Kevin Harris step aside after 14 years at the helm of Northern Sydney Institute.

Kevin has been one of the outstanding figures in the vocational education and training sector with a contribution spanning four decades including as a long-term board member of TAFE Directors Australia.

TDA wishes Kevin the very best for his ‘retirement’ although we know that he will remain active on many fronts and will be continuing as a deputy chair of WorldSkills Australia.

Lessons on transitioning from VET to university

Recent NCVER research, undertaken by Sonia White from the Queensland University of Technology, looks at the transition from TAFE to university of students enrolled in a Diploma of Children’s Services, a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) and a Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies.

Looking through a lens of the information literacy skill needs of students, the study found that the shift from competency based training in vocational education to curricula in higher education poses challenges for TAFE students in adjusting to different learning cultures and means of assessment.

TAFE and university students reported using similar online information search strategies and shared similar difficulties in aspects of information literacy (such as understanding and preparing the assessment task, assimilating information and adhering to writing and referencing styles). The two groups differed in the complexity and types of information they were researching.

TAFE students tended to prioritise recent practical Australian information in their field whereas university students looked for recent peer-received sources.

Many TAFE students were unfamiliar with university expectations and felt that a ‘university experience’ was essential before considering enrolment in higher education and that TAFE assessments could be more aligned with university expectations towards the end of a Diploma.
