TDA 2013 National Conference – newly appointed TAFE Queensland CEO to speak at workshop

TDA is delighted that the newly appointed CEO of TAFE Queensland, Jodi Schmidt, will be a guest speaker at an important TDA conference workshop in Brisbane, Sunday 1 September.

The workshop, “So you want to be a CEO?” is designed for those who aspire to leadership, as well as those who may have recently taken on senior executive roles.

Jodi Schmidt heads the new statutory body ‘TAFE Queensland’, so her views on TAFE management will be of interest to all TAFE Institute executives, particularly those in Queensland.

The workshop will be chaired by Virginia Simmons AO, of Virsis Consulting, and one of the most experienced TAFE managers and administrators. Other panellists will be Liz Harris, CEO, Challenger Institute of Technology; Dr Leo Goedegebuure, Director, LH Martin Institute; and Andrew Worner, Executive Search, Slade Partners.

Details of all the workshops are available here.

Brendan O’Connor, Minister for Employment, Skills and Training meets TDA

Minister O'Connor and Martin Riordan

The newly appointed Minister for Employment, Skills and Training, Hon. Brendan O’Connor MP, made time to meet TDA Chair Stephen Conway, and CEO Martin Riordan, in Melbourne last week.

TDA discussed several issues concerning TAFE Institutes, including remaining Education Investment Fund 2012 grants yet to be announced, and extended delays to prior Government pledges on Streamlined Visas for international students seeking places in TAFE and vocational colleges.

Martin Riordan also raised concerns about continuing declines in Australian Apprenticeships, and seeking acceleration of Alternate Pathway programs, originally promised with a $70M grant under the Federal Budget 2013.

Stephen Conway, who took part by teleconference from Launceston while attending a local launch, welcomed Minister O’Connor and urged decisive responses on the key issues continuing in the portfolio.

TDA joins #ScrapTheCap

TDA has joined the #ScrapTheCap Alliance in a bid by industry to have the Federal Government reverse the introduction of a $2000 cap on tax deductibility of self-education expenses.

There are a total of 71 organisations that are now part of the initiative.

Holmesglen hosts food science study tour

Holmesglen has hosted a group from China’s Jiangsu Food Science College (JFSC) as part of a joint study program.

The 24 leaders and teachers (pictured) from JFSC in Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, undertook a customised program in vocational training and assessment.

The program included 10 days of classroom delivery in Huai'an, followed by five days further delivery at Holmesglen. The group then participated in a five-day study tour which included familiarisation sessions across Holmesglen's faculties, an overnight visit to Holmesglen's Rural Learning Centre at Eildon and sightseeing tours to Port Campbell and Phillip Island.

The development and delivery of the training program was a result of JSFC's President Mr Zhao Binqi's visit to Holmesglen as part of the TDA/CEAIE leadership training program in 2012. The program was extremely successful with outstanding feedback from all participants.

New report highlights impact of quality cuts on TAFE

Tertiary graduates are increasingly entering the workplace with substandard qualifications, placing the state government under renewed pressure to overhaul the vocational education system.

According to an article in The Age, a new report has found the reforms have undermined TAFE, affected quality, and failed to properly tackle skills shortages.

The report, by independent think tank Per Capita, says the system has resulted in ''unintended detrimental affects'' and a ''false economy'' of poorly targeted funding cuts.

International experts dissect UK funding reforms

Two leading international speakers will discuss the impact of higher education funding policy changes on further education colleges in the UK at a free seminar hosted by TDA and the LH Martin Institute.

The guest speakers are John Widdowson of New College Durham and Amarjit Basi of New College Nottingham.

The UK government has introduced funding changes that make it possible for further education colleges to access public funding for higher education programs. Previously, further education colleges relied on universities to accredit and fund their higher programs. They are now less reliant on universities for funding and can compete with them for students, if they choose to do so

This free seminar is on Wednesday 28 August at Level 1, 715 Swanston St Carlton, 6-8pm with refreshments from 5.15pm. Registrations are essential.
