TDA Conference Occasional Paper now online

Relive the 2012 TDA National Conference by viewing the Occasional Paper, now online at the TDA website.

The paper includes all presentations from last year’s East Meets West conference in Perth, including speeches from Federal Tertiary Education and Skills Minister, Senator the Hon Chris Evans, WA Premier, the Hon Colin Barnett, the Shadow Minister for Employment Participation, the Hon Sussan Ley and other experts in the VET field.

The conference explored a range of topics, including the opportunities and challenges facing the public provider; improving training and employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians; whether Australia has a sustainable, competitive advantage in skills development; how federal VET policy is impacting productivity; and best practice in TAFE governance and organisation.

TDA Green Skills Director to present at international conference

The American Community Colleges’ Workforce Development Institute will include TDA’s Director of International Green Skills Network, Linda Condon, to present at its conference in San Diego, this week.

Linda Condon will deliver a presentation discussing “How sustainability skills are delivered to industry by Australian TAFEs”.  She will be showcasing case studies of TAFEs in Australia, focusing on their work in delivering Carbon Accounting courses, assisting industry in sustainable strategy development and training in sustainable work practices across a range of disciplines.

Linda is scheduled to meet executives of the American Association of Community College (AACC), including the AACC Chief Executive, Dr Walter Bumphus, and the CEO of the Sustainability Education and Economic Development (SEED), Mr Todd Cohen, to outline the work Australian TAFEs are undertaking in sustainability and green skills.

She will also be meeting with the organisers of a delegation of AACC faculty staff interested in renewable energy who will visit Australia in March this year.

In April, TDA has been invited to co-host a workshop featuring green skills at the AACC 2013 National Convention, in San Francisco. Linda Condon is developing a detailed paper to explore ‘Green Skills Networks: How the US and Australia are Pioneering New Collaborative Programs to Meet the Demand for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Disciplines’. The paper will be jointly presented by TDA staff and USA experts, and is coordinated by Mr Mark Darby from Australian International Education (AIE).

Government expands Kickstart incentives

The Federal Government will expand its Kickstart initiative to incorporate further Engineering trades.

Tertiary Education and Skills Minister, Senator the Hon Chris Evans, announced nine additional engineering trades would be eligible for the Kickstart payments.

The Kickstart initiative increases the incentives paid to employers in the first year they take on an apprentice in selected skill areas.

The new eligible trades are Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (both Avionics and Mechanical), Fitter, Fitter and Turner, Fitter-Welder, Metal Fabricator, Metal Machinist, Pressure Welder and Toolmaker.

Mixed results on government’s Youth Attainment and Transitions program

The latest evaluation of the federal government’s National Partnership on Youth Attainment and Transitions program has revealed varying results for different age groups.

Despite a decrease in early school-leavers and an increase in Indigenous participation rates, the latest results show that there are a large group of young people who are neither “earning nor learning”.

The number of 20-24 years olds not engaged in education, training or work has risen from 19.5% in 2008, to 22.5% in 2011.

While the number of 15-24 year olds in full-time education or training has risen, political reporter Daniel Hurst argues in the Sydney Morning Herald that some of the older Gen Y members are struggling to find their feet after the GFC.

The government program is aimed at increasing the number of young people, especially Indigenous young people, completing Year 12 or equivalent qualification.
