Victorian Government responds to Victorian TAFE Chairs with “letters of comfort”

The Victorian Skills Minister, the Hon. Peter Hall, has revealed in State Parliament that, in response to discussions with TAFE Chairs and Boards, the Government would issue “letters of comfort” to several TAFE boards, guaranteeing financial support in the event that they found themselves in deficit and without cash reserves.

However, the government failed to clarify whether or not it would support TAFEs to pay a forthcoming state-wide pay rise, introduced under the previous government and commencing in October.

Record number of students studying at TAFE, continuing trends in tertiary education - NCVER

More students than ever are studying at tertiary level, according to the latest tertiary education and training figures. TAFE retained market share leadership, with a combined 79% of full time VET students.

Enrolments into VET courses continued to significantly outnumber those entering universities, with 1.79 million students in VET compared with 1.19 million in university, despite the uncapped places being funded by the Australian Government into higher education.

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) publication, Tertiary education and training in Australia 2010, provided a broad view of educational activity across the tertiary sector, now that NCVER collects university data.

Overall, full-time equivalent tertiary student numbers increased nationally, from 1.4 million in 2009 to 1.5 million in 2010, representing an increase of 6.7%. The rise was reflected across all states and territories, with the greatest increase occurring in Queensland, up by 8.7%.

The Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) is compiling a report to assess key transnational education opportunities in the Asian market for Australian VET providers.

DIISRTE will review a selection of high growth Asian economies to identify opportunities and skills gaps, evaluate potential barriers and risks and highlight VET success stories to inform policy options and strategies to help improve Australian VET providers’ access to Asian markets.

The Department will be seeking stakeholder input and is particularly interested in canvassing the views of Australian providers delivering VET in a sample of Asian economies experiencing rapid growth.
