TDA calls for overhaul of funding to high risk training providers

TAFE Directors Australia has given evidence on the first day of hearings of the newly established House of Representatives Inquiry into TAFE, with a call for stricter criteria for the funding of high risk registered training organisations (RTOs).

TDA pointed out that there are more than 5,000 RTOs, with only about 100 delivering some 90 per cent of the qualifications that receive VET funding. The cost of compliance relates to the 90 per cent that deliver only 10 per cent of the training.

TDA highlighted the national role of the public provider, which enrols 1.6 million public VET students a year, with a presence across city, suburban, rural, regional and remote Australia.

Appearing before the Committee were TDA Chief Executive, Martin Riordan, TDA Board member for the ACT, Adrian Marron (CEO of Canberra Institute of Technology), and Pam Caven, TDA Director Policy and Stakeholder Engagement.

TDA also made a detailed submission to the separate Senate Standing Committee on Education and Employment, which under a Greens and Opposition motion, is also conducting an Inquiry into TAFE.

TAFE Institutes, industry clients of TAFE, TAFE students and communities involved with TAFE will be able to present evidence to the House of Representatives Committee on Education and Employment, during visits to city and regional locations in most states, during April.

The two training organisations have pledged to discuss opportunities for greater collaboration; to explore options for better reporting on attendance of apprentices and trainees; to review how outcomes for students and employers can be maximised; and to improve assessment validation.

Sponsorship and exhibition opportunities for TDA 2014 National Conference

TDA is pleased to invite organisations to consider sponsorship of the 2014 National Conference. The two-day conference, to be held at the Sheraton on the Park, Sydney on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 September 2014, is the annual showcase for Australian public providers of vocational education and training (VET) courses to thousands of Australian and overseas students.

Australia’s public technical and further education providers enjoy a special relationship with business and industry, providing specialist skills training and workforce development programs for many in the private and public sectors.

The TDA Conference is a ‘must attend’ for all VET CEOs and senior managers, as well as many federal and state government officials and others involved in VET.

The conference usually attracts over 300 delegates and has many informal opportunities to make contact with education and government leaders, in addition to the impressive structured program of addresses and workshops. The response to the 2013 Conference from delegates was overwhelmingly positive.

You are invited to become sponsors of the 2014 TDA Conference and forge business links with senior managers from Australia’s 61 TAFE providers, VET leaders, CEOs, business managers, international business managers, senior executives, industry partners in Industry Skills Councils, peak bodies and enterprises, and universities.
