High-tech resources industry learning centre opens in WA
The Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations, the Hon Senator Chris Evans, has launched a new $3.2 million Mining and Renewable Energy Training Centre at the East-Perth campus of the Central Institute of Technology in Western Australia.
The new facility will support mining industry training, focusing on exploration, mineral processing and gold assaying.
Minister Evans said the centre will provide “a modern teaching and learning environment for the state’s oldest technical training institute and graduates can look forward to strong job opportunities in Australia’s vibrant mining industry.”

Accounting program provides new pathways to university
TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute has launched a new program to help accounting students gain higher education qualifications.
The NSW Minister for Education, the Hon Adrian Piccoli MP, helped launch the new initiative at the Port Macquarie campus.
The program is the first of its kind, and will enable accounting students to study an Associate Degree of Accounting at NSW TAFE for two years, before progressing to the third year of a bachelor degree.
Minister Piccoli said: “This program offers real choice for people who may not have previously considered going to university or getting a post school qualification.”

TEQSA – discussion paper released on standards
The imminent Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) has released a discussion paper on standards in teaching and learning.
The paper looks at definitions, and the state of knowledge internationally and nationally of setting and monitoring standards in teaching and learning. The paper concludes with a proposal for an Australian approach.

Queensland Budget – boost for work and training
The Queensland State Budget will allocate more than $104 million to the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative – aimed at helping people who face significant barriers to work.
Participants will receive training in areas including construction, horticulture, retail, hospitality, administration, community services and aged care.
Many of the projects undertaken by participants will be related to flood and cyclone recovery.

New edition of China VET journal
The first 2011 edition of the Vocational and Technical Education in China Journal has been published.
The focus of this recent issue is the implementation of rural vocational education which is an important policy area for China.

First round of skills funding delivered in August
Successful proposals for the first round of the Critical Skills Investment Fund (CSIF) will be funded from August this year, as announced by the Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations, the Hon Senator Chris Evans.
The CSIF will provide $558 million of funding over four years to support training and workforce development in areas of skills needs. Following a period of expressions of interest, 108 organisations have been asked to submit full proposals.

Policy in the Pub – this afternoon in Sydney
TVET will be holding a ‘Policy in the Pub’ event on the topic of language, literacy and numeracy today at 4:30pm in Sydney.
Guest speakers will include Robert Paton, Chief Executive Officer, Manufacturing Skills Australia, Lindsay McGarity, Director, Social Inclusion and Vocational Access Skills Unit, TAFE NSW Training and Education Support, and Jana Scomazzon, LLN expert and Director, Language and Training Group.
