Support struggling students – Mick Young Oration tickets available

Tickets are still available for the Mick Young Oration, the third annual lecture hosted by TDA acknowledging the contribution of the Mick Young Scholarship Trust. The 2009 Oration will be delivered by the Federal Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan MP.

This year’s Lecture will be hosted in Parliament House, 18 November, and is a great way to show support to the Trust, which has helped more than 200,000 students who struggle with the financial demands of study, with donations of some $225,000p.a. It is also an opportunity to hear the Federal Treasurer deliver a landmark address on Australia’s productivity drive and the role of skills and TAFE.

The Oration by the Federal Treasurer will be followed by a Parliamentary dinner where attendees can take the opportunity to network with colleagues, industry representatives and Members of Parliament.

Research into student experiences in TAFE

TAFE Directors Australia has commissioned research to examine the experiences of students who undertake a technical or further education course in Australia.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is providing funding support for the study which will highlight areas of good practice and inform areas for development, with the overall aim of improving the experience for this group of learners.

The research is being carried out by the International Graduate Insight Group www.i-graduate.org which have surveyed over 400 institutions in 13 countries, with more than 400,000 students participating in the study.

Surveys are currently being conducted in over 35 TAFE institutes around Australia and the results will be disseminated to each participant in early 2010.

TDA responds to DEEWR review of training framework

TDA has provided a response to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations’ study on strategies and options for strengthening the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) (view project brief here).

A number of members contributed to the TDA response, including Swan TAFE which provided detailed feedback. A major concern of members was that this review of the AQTF does not “overly burden all providers with additional regulatory frameworks, in response to the behaviour of a minority of providers” (Swan TAFE).

TDA Benchmarking survey embarking on sixth year

TDA is offering all TAFE institutes the opportunity to participate in a unique benchmarking activity. Now in its sixth year, the 2009 TAFE Benchmarking will capture key data on international activity including costs, staffing, conversion rates and mobility.

Each participant completes an online survey and the data is independently benchmarked against the group as a whole. Last year eighteen TAFE institutes participated and their exclusive individual and group reports provided essential information for forward planning and strategic decision making.

All members will receive an invitation to participate this week.
