Training jobs rollout commences in NSW

The NSW Government has engaged approximately 500 new apprentices as part of the first stage of its rollout of new infrastructure and training programs to deal with the economic downturn.

In a detailed report provided to key industry stakeholders who participated in the April Jobs Summit, Premier Nathan Rees also says a total of 74 cadetships have been advertised with appointments about to commence, and a further 426 positions will be advertised in October.

The Government is funding 4,000 apprenticeships and 2,000 cadetships within the public sector over the next four years, aligned to major infrastructure projects being developed.

China swamps the market for offshore VET campuses

China remains the powerhouse nation for the delivery of offshore education by Australian public VET providers.

Latest research from Australian Education International (AEI) and NCVER shows the growing importance to the VET sector of transnational education (TNE) – the provision of education by Australian providers offshore.

The figures show that from 2003-2007, offshore delivery consistently outpaced onshore delivery, with 2007 recording a dramatic increase.

For most countries, the offshore component represents only a small percentage of total international enrolments – the exception is China where 90% of enrolments are offshore.

A brighter outlook for jobs in official forecasts

DEEWR’s Monthly Leading Indicator of Employment has risen for the second consecutive month in August, after falling for 18 successive months. The forward indicator also saw its July numbers revised upwards, lending support to a more positive outlook for future jobs growth.

DEEWR cautions that another four consecutive monthly increases would be needed for the “turning point” in the indicator to be confirmed.

The official ABS unemployment rate remained steady at 5.8% for July, fuelled by a sharp rise in part time employment.
