An inside-out view of the training market
Twelve experts have offered their views on the state of competition and the role of government in the Australian training sector.
NCVER commissioned six people from ‘outside’ the VET sector to write about competition in the training market. It then invited six ‘insiders’ to respond.
The results from both groups are contained in a new volume, Competition in the Training Market.
NCVER says there is general acknowledgement that the risks associated with the state determining the supply and demand for training mean that governments cannot retreat from the training market. Click here to view more.
New award recognises sustainable skills training
Minister for Employment Participation, the Hon Mark Arbib, has announced a Skills for Sustainability award recognising educational providers that deliver outstanding nationally-recognised training programs, products and work processes.
TAFE Institutes are encouraged to nominate for the award which was developed in response to the 2020 Summit in 2008 and is part of the government’s Skills for Carbon Challenge.

Access to training for rural and regional students under review
The adequacy of the government to provide access to skills and training for rural and regional students has been referred by the Senate to the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee for review.
The matter includes:
An assessment of the adequacy of government measures to provide equitable access to secondary and post-secondary education opportunities to students from rural and regional communities attending metropolitan institutions and metropolitan students attending regional universities or technical and further education (TAFE) colleges...
