Successful TAFE Institutes for $200 million infrastructure funding

A list of TAFE Institutes that have secured funding under the Training Infrastructure Investment for Tomorrow (TIIFT) program has been announced by Acting Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Senator Mark Arbib.

The TIIFT is part of the $500 million Teaching and Learning Capital Fund for Vocational Education and Training.

Skills Australia CEO appointed

Current CEO of the City of Westminster College, London, Mr Robin Shreeve, has been announced as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Skills Australia.

Robin Shreeve will take up his new position in October. Robin served on the Board of the former NSW entity TAFE Global, and as a Deputy Director-General for Technical and Further Education with the NSW Government.

TDA welcomes the appointment of Mr Shreeve and looks forward to working closely with him and Skills Australia in reviewing sector governance, the ‘One Tertiary’ ambitions of the Rudd Government, and its widening brief on skills, now across VET and Higher Education. View the announcement here.

Chile delegation visit for Queensland graduations

Representatives of BECAs CHILE will visit Australia this week, to be part of the inaugural Chilean Technical Scholarship Program.

The Chilean delegation will attend graduation ceremonies in Mt. Isa and Brisbane, for Chilean technical scholarship students completing their courses, as part of the pilot project hosted by TAFE Queensland Institutes.

TAFE Directors Australia will host a briefing later this week in Canberra for the delegation. It will be joined by representatives of TAFE Institutes registered to take part in further student scholarship opportunities due to be offered online later this year in Chile. The delegation will visit Melbourne and Adelaide, and an AEI representative will continue to Perth.

TDA welcomes the delegation, and congratulates the students successfully completing their courses in Queensland.

Latest State Budget news

Both the New South Wales and Queensland Budgets have been handed down with substantial pledges on TAFE funding and infrastructure.

The NSW Budget included a record $14.7 billion investment in schools and vocational education including an increase in training places through the ‘Earn of Learn’ initiative, an increase of $104 million for recurring TAFE funding and $560 million for school and TAFE infrastructure projects. The Queensland Budget focused heavily on education. It included an extra 350 teachers and teacher aides, as well as $48 million for teacher professional development in schools and TAFEs. A total of $203 million will facilitate a range of training initiatives for new and existing apprentice and trainees. Read more here.

ACCI report to help retain apprentices

The induction of apprentices, provision of meaningful work, and quality training have been identified amongst the key factors in improving the retention of apprentices and trainees according to a new report.

A Systematic Approach to the Retention of Apprentices from the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) sets out the key issues for employers in attracting and retaining high-quality apprentices and trainees.

New regulations to place pressure on ‘dodgy’ private institutions

TDA Victorian board member, Virginia Simmons, CEO of Chisholm Institute of TAFE, was quoted, among other VET leaders, in an article about the benefits of a proposed Australian Qualifications Framework in The Australian.

The article outlined the new framework’s improvement to standards and regulations, and its ability to make it easier to shut down ‘dodgy’ private institutions.

Report outlines the progress of the Rudd Government

Prime Minister, the Hon. Kevin Rudd MP, has released the Federal Government Mid-Term Progress Report outlining the story-so-far in implementing government policy.

The report outlines initiatives related to the Education Revolution including the increased investment in TAFE and vocational education.

Mutual benefits likely from La Trobe University and TAFE talks

La Trobe University is reportedly in talks with TAFEs located in the regional areas of Shepparton, Mildura and Albury-Wodonga about the sharing of infrastructure and staff.

As a part of La Trobe’s new regional strategy, it is looking to boost the number of regional students enrolling at the university and exploit the mutual benefits of sharing resources.

New initiative puts tradies health under the spotlight

A new initiative that will monitor the health of trades workers has received more than $200,000 from the Federal Government.

The Tradies Tune-up initiative was announced by Minister for Health, the Hon Nicola Roxon MP, and Minister for Minister for Indigenous Health, Rural and Regional Health and Regional Services Delivery, the Hon Warren Snowdon MP.

The initiative will be run by OzHelp Foundation, a partnership between the Master Builders Association and the CFMEU. A mobile van will run 20 minute health sessions for all on-site workers. Tests will include levels of cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, and waist size. The workers will also receive advice on mental health, nutrition and alcohol consumption.
