TDA welcomes Federal Government $155 million funding package for apprentices and trainees

TAFE Directors Australia has welcomed the $155 million Federal Government funding package which follows calls from TDA and Group Training Australia to support the continued training and employment of apprentices who lose their jobs during the economic downturn.

The announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, included $9.7 million to support the off-the-job training component of apprenticeships and traineeships at Certificate III, IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma level.

Under the Securing Apprenticeships through Registered Training Organisations plan, TAFE Institutes (RTOs) will be eligible to receive funding of either $1,250 or $2,500 for each out-of-work apprentice that completes their off-the-job training.

The package also includes $145.6 million for employers and group training organisations to assist in the rehiring of apprentices and trainees who are out-of-work.

TDA CEO, Martin Riordan welcomed the announcement:

"Our board presentation to the Deputy Prime Minister's officials prior to Christmas, and subsequent joint submissions by TDA and Group Training Australia, sought assistance to offset risks of major interruptions to training contracts during this difficult period of economic slowdown".

Bushfire Appeal - TAFE update

TDA extends its thanks to those many TAFE Institutes directly helping those Victorians from the TAFE system affected by the recent fires. David Williams, CEO of the VTA, advises that because of the emergency services' concern about issuing personal details, we can advise:

  • We understand up to seven houses owned by TAFE personnel may have been destroyed
  • We salute those Victorian Institutes who marshalled their hospitality schools, to drive refrigerated vans to directly help victims with food, and kitchen items - this help has been ongoing, and congratulations for these efforts
  • Several Institutes had campus properties near or within bushfire affected zones. Information indicates that fires went close, but did not seriously damage these properties.
  • The VTA is progressing special scholarship donations.

TDA continues to recommend bushfire donations be made direct to The Red Cross Emergency Bushfire Appeal. See website www.redcross.org.au

TAFE Benchmarking of International Office Operations - 2008 data released

TDA would like to thank members for their involvement in the 2008 Benchmarking of International Office Operations study, conducted by Strategy Policy and Research in Education Limited (www.spre.com.hk).

This year's study involved a record number of 18 institutes and TAFE systems - encompassing data on almost 14,000 international students and representing $161 million dollars in revenue to the 18 TAFE institutes.

Studies of this kind are vital to the continual improvement processes within international operations and have been used effectively by a range of members to improve and reward their practice. Special thanks to all contributors in the study and to Alan Olsen from SPRE who leads this work every year for TAFE.
