TDA AND REPUBLIC OF CHILE IN LANDMARK AGREEMENT

TDA and the Government of the Republic of Chile have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will support TAFE delivering vocational education and training and English language courses to some 400 Chilean students, effective 2009.

The agreement signed between TDA Chair, Deb Daly and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, the Hon. Alejandro Foxley, will facilitate TAFE Institutes to bid for placing up to 400 Chilean International Bicentennial Scholarship recipients to TAFE Institutes, to study English, and skill courses in fields such as biotechnology, ICT, mining, agriculture, aquaculture, tourism and hospitality, education and health issues.

The Memorandum of Understanding coincides with last week's Australia-Chile FTA, provides for equal standing to vocational and higher education, with TAFE selected as the preferred provider for English language and skills courses and training.

VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT PUSHES HECS FOR VET IN SKILLS REFORM PLAN, MEDIA REPORTS

Media reports indicated that the Victorian Premier, the Hon. John Brumby MP was in final negotiations with the Federal Government to radically overhaul Victoria's VET sector in a plan that would seek to spearhead a uniform national framework.

The Victorian vocational education and training blueprint reportedly aimed to overhaul funding mechanisms, with a contestably public/private model proposed.

Loan arrangements similar to the Higher Education Loan Prgramme (HELP) would be a key component of the plan, aimed to help students cope with higher fees, and compliment the introduction of VET FEE HELP from 2009.
