Victorian Premier the Hon John Brumby MP, has announced $20 million of funding to improve facilities and equipment in Victoria's 18 TAFEs.
The announcement was made at Box Hill TAFE, with Skills Minister the Hon Jacinta Allan also in attendance.

The updated Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) Business Services Training Package will be launched by the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator the Hon Kim Carr, 29 January in Melbourne.
The package includes three new qualifications:
- BSB30506 Certificate III in Business Administration (International Education)
- BSB50907 Diploma of International Education Services, and
- BSB70207 Vocational Graduate Certificate in International Education Services
TDA CEO, Martin Riordan, and TDA Director International Engagement, Rebecca Biazos, met with IBSA to discuss collaboration in a number of areas. These include steps to encourage TAFEs to update the new qualifications, and opportunities for alignment between IBSA and TDA on upcoming projects.

Rebecca Biazos B Int Bus M Int Rel., has been appointed Director, International Engagement, at the National Secretariat. Rebecca held the position of Director VET Export Office, DETA Queensland, and has represented Queensland on numerous domestic and international education missions and policy developments.
Rebecca will remain based in Brisbane, and begins by leading a successful AEI tender win by TDA, to develop an international marketing brief and package for the sector.
Rebecca joins Martin Riordan, CEO, and Melbourne-based Pam Caven, Director Stakeholder Engagement, as directors at the National Secretariat, which re-located last year to the Canberra Institute of Technology Southside Campus, Woden, ACT. www.tda.edu.au (NB directors invited to use Secretariat if visiting Canberra !! )
Helen Davis BA MA., has been appointed Executive Assistant/Administrator at the National Secretariat. Helen returned recently from the UK to Canberra, after appointments with the Defence College of Management and Technology (DCMT), and earlier the Royal Military College of Science at Cranfield University. Earlier in Australia, Helen was employed in administration with NGO agencies Lifeline and Family Planning, and the TESOL Centre, University of Canberra.

The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has written to peak bodies advising of proposed updates to the Explanatory Guide for the revised National Code.
Upon releasing the National Code 2007, DEEWR made a commitment to update the Explanatory Guide twice a year. The first update focuses on standards that are of most interest to providers and students:
- Standard 7 - Transfers between registered providers (click here for update)
- Standard 11 - Monitoring attendance (click here for update)
To assist in understanding the changes to Standard 7, a fact sheet has been prepared.
TDA is aware of members' concerns regarding the ability to monitor compliance issues, particularly in relation to Standard 7. Members are invited to contact Rebecca Biazos, Director International Engagement, regarding these concerns (email@example.com or 0407550180). Expressions of Interest are now sought from Registered Training Organisations to participate in a Trial of the AQTF 2007 Excellence Criteria.
The Excellence Criteria offer RTOs an opportunity to voluntarily evaluate and improve their performance through internally focused activities and to apply for formal recognition through an independent external evaluation. The Trial will involve fifteen RTOs from around Australia, and will be conducted over the first half of 2008.

Australian and Canadian governments have recently submitted reports to the OECD on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
The reports found that despite recognition being a major policy initiative for governments in many countries, uptake remains low. For a detailed summary click here:
