ASQA outlines application timeframes in latest update

The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has released an update on the timeframes for applications, and acknowledged that the processing of applications has been slow due to an unusually heavy workload.

ASQA also says that places are filling for its information sessions to be held around the country. Click here to see the latest ASQA update.

Prime Minister says TAFE is central to Australia’s national imagination

TDA has welcomed today’s commitment by the Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, to preserve the important role of the nation’s TAFE system and introduce quality criteria which will determine access to public funding.

The Prime Minister praised the TAFE system and its critical role in the VET system, saying:

“(This) is a plan that is mindful of the central place that TAFE plays in our training system and indeed in our national imagination.

“Our TAFEs are essential public institutions that have a presence in every region and collectively deliver 80 per cent of VET training.

“TAFE is known for its sophisticated technical education and its ability to reach those in our community who are marginalised. Our plan encompasses TAFE and all of vocational education, and it starts with this simple proposition: skills are no longer an optional extra but a necessity.”

The Prime Minister outlined the Federal Government’s plans to introduce HECs-style loans, independent quality assessments for VET courses, a national unique student identifier, and Myskills website.

Industry could snap-up state funding

The Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, the Hon Senator Chris Evans, has warned that $1.75 billion of federal funding could be distributed to industry if states fail to sign-up to the Federal Government’s VET reform plans.

In a speech delivered at the National Press Club, Minister Evans said that students in states which hadn’t signed-up through the National Partnership Agreement wouldn’t miss out, and that the money would be distributed through industry.

The statement was made in the lead-up to the COAG meeting to be held next month, and at which states will be urged to sign-up to the reforms.

Congratulations to 2012 Fullbright recipient, Dr Caroline Smith

Skills Australia Director, Dr Caroline Smith, has been awarded a 2012 Fullbright Scholarship in Vocational Education and Training.

TDA congratulates Dr Smith on her scholarship, which is funded by the Department of Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education and was announced by the Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, Senator the Hon Chris Evans.

The Fulbright Scholarship is one of the world's largest and most prestigious educational exchange programs. Since 1949 more than 2,600 Australians and 2,000 Americans have participated in the program, which is jointly funded by the Australian and United States Governments.

Dr Smith plans to visit Rutgers University, New Jersey, for four months to examine the role of Regional Partnerships for Vocational Education and Training and Workforce Development. Read more about Dr Smith here.

Research grants available

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has invited applications from early career researchers to conduct research relevant to the contemporary tertiary education and training environment.
