Victorian TAFE budget cuts - Update

The impact of the recent Victorian Budget has intensified, with details revealing that TAFE funding cuts may reach some $300 million and impact 1,200 jobs across the TAFE sector.

The consequences of the Budget cuts have been detailed, warning of serious impacts to rural and regional TAFE institutes.

Metropolitan and dual-sector TAFEs are also expecting reductions in staff and courses.

Victorian Education Minister, the Hon. Peter Hall, and senior Skills Victoria executives are planning a tour of the state’s TAFE Institutes.

See an article in The Age with suggestions from Tertiary Education and Skills Minister, Senator Chris Evans, that Victoria might lose $435 million in Federal funding if the TAFE cuts threaten national skills reform.

NSW welcomes TAFE enterprise agreements

TAFE staff have voted in favour of accepting the first TAFE NSW enterprise agreements.

In late 2011, the NSW Parliament passed legislation allowing the TAFE Commission to once again become the employer of its own staff.

Last week, TAFE NSW educational staff voted to accept the TAFE enterprise agreements, with 93% supporting the proposal.

“This agreement maintains current working conditions and provides a 2.5% pay increase – in line with the NSW Government’s wages policy – which has been backdated to early January,” NSW Minister for Education Hon. Adrian Piccoli stated in his media release.

WA Minister to open TDA National Conference

TDA is delighted that Western Australia’s Minister for Training and Workforce Development, Indigenous Affairs, and Energy, the Hon. Peter Collier, has accepted its invitation to welcome delegates to the conference.

The TDA conference, East Meets West, will be held in Perth on 6-7 September.
It will explore issues of skills development between Australia and Asia, and also the changing relationship between our western and eastern states.

With Western Australia at the epicentre of Australia’s resources boom, the Minister’s portfolio focus is pivotal to the broader national skills and training agenda.

During the conference, VET leaders, CEOs, business managers, senior executives, industry partners, peak bodies, enterprises, and universities will join to discuss some of the most critical issues facing the VET sector.

To register now or for more information visit the TDA conference website.

TEQSA seeking information to conclude higher education trends

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) is seeking information from higher education providers that will assist them to determine trends in the sector.

TEQSA is proposing a three-month reporting window until the end of August 2012, in which they are seeking the following:

• Student data covering the main Higher Education Information Management System (HEIMS) elements relating to enrolment, load, progression and completions.

• Staff data covering the main HEIMS elements relating to contract type, full-time equivalent (FTE) value, work type, level and, for academic staff, their highest qualifications.

• Financial data including registered entity audited statements for the last three financial years and a forecast for the next two years.
