TAFE SA appoints new CEO

TAFE SA has appointed Jeff Gunningham as its new CEO, following a national and international search.

Jeff has held leadership roles in vocational education, training and higher education in Australia, the UK and the United Arab Emirates.

His most recent appointment was as Principal and Chief Executive of Swansea College in Wales. Previously, when based in Australia, he held a senior government appointment in the vocational education and schools sector in Western Australia.

Chair of TAFE SA, Peter Vaughan said Jeff would oversee the ongoing transformation of TAFE SA from its current three Institutes – TAFE SA Adelaide North, Adelaide South and Regional – into one unified operation.

Jeff holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering (Hons) from the Polytechnic of Wales, a Graduate Diploma in Management from the University of Western Australia and an MBA from the University of New England.

TDA offers its congratulations to Jeff on his appointment.

Victorian Budget

The Victorian Budget has allocated $200 million over four years to TAFE Institutes to support innovation and structural reform.

The Minister for Higher Education and Skills the Hon Peter Hall said it would help TAFEs to prosper within the competitive vocational training market.

A total of $100 million would be awarded to TAFEs for infrastructure proposals to help them better compete with the private sector. The remaining $100 million would be provided for structural and operational reform proposals that result in improved financial sustainability.

Melbourne launch of "Reinventing service delivery"

The Melbourne launch of Reinventing service delivery, a TDA-commissioned research project under Dr John Mitchell, was jointly hosted by The VET Development Centre on 6 May, and was well attended with 70 participants from providers and industry.

Martin Riordan, CEO TDA, Denise Stevens, CEO VET Development Centre, Brett McLeod of Kangan Institute, Julie Haselhorst, Council of Textile and Fashion Industries, and Dr John Mitchell

Dr Mitchell provided an overview of the five case studies reviewing methodology on TAFE Institutes collaborating with enterprises to meet demanding goals set by industry and government.

The VET Development Centre had included the industry research as one of its ‘Thought Leaders’ lectures, to profile the partnership between Kangan Institute and the Council of Textile and Fashion Industries of Australia. The Victorian case study explored how TAFE operated to help particularly ‘micro small’ to medium sized businesses developing skills for the new economy.

Brett McLeod, Kangan Institute and Julia Haselhorst, Council of Textile and Fashion Industries provided a lively account of the strengths of the partnership and strategies for working with SME enterprises.

The forum was opened by Nicholas Hunt, TDA Board member for Victoria (CEO, William Angliss Institute of TAFE). Dr Mitchell said the case study provided a further illustration of the way that TAFE is modelling leading-edge practice in its engagement with industry, and it demolishes some of the criticism about TAFE’s supposed inflexibility.

Reinventing service delivery is available at www.tda.edu, and a further workshop is planned at the TDA 2013 National Conference in Brisbane (2-3 Sept).

Digital transformation research project

The impact of the digital revolution on institutions, including TAFEs, is being explored in a new research project being undertaken by the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR).

The study will look at impacts on teaching and learning, as well as interactions with students and relationships with industry and government.

NIEIR is keen to hear your experiences, and would like to arrange a 20-30 minute telephone interview.

Help the Skillaroos reach their goal

There are only 13 days left until the 2013 Team Australia Skillaroos depart for the WorldSkills international competition in Germany, and help is needed!

It is estimated that cost of shipping all of the toolboxes will exceed $50,000 and financial support is needed to help to get them there.

The group comprises 32 of the nation’s most talented young apprentices and trainees representing 29 different trade and skill areas. They will compete over four days of competition, before some 200,000 spectators, against competitors from up to 65 countries.

The group can’t  compete without their tools, and some of the toolboxes are large and can weigh up to 300 kilograms.
