Join Minister Sussan Ley for dinner- Canberra March 5

TDA is hosting a special dinner at which the Assistant Minister for Education, Sussan Ley will launch the TAFE National Achievement Scholarships, including a dedicated category for VET in Schools graduates.

This is an opportunity for educators and industry leaders to hear the minister speak on the topic of VET in schools.  By attending you will also be supporting TAFE National Scholarships that recognise outstanding achievement.

See the flyer for details of how you and your colleagues can reserve a place.

Giving more weight to skilled trades

The Assistant Minister for Education, Sussan Ley, with responsibility for VET in Schools, has signalled her intention to raise the status of skilled trades with measures to instil vocational training earlier in the school curriculum.

In an article in the Australian Financial Review, Ms Ley said that trades should no longer be regarded as the “B team” in comparison with university.

Ms Ley said she would like to see pre-apprenticeships offered as early as Year 10 as part of a wider review of the role of vocational education and training (VET) in schools.

In an article in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, journalist Ben Pike picked up a similar theme, arguing it was time for greater weight to be put on the value of a trade.

TDA and VET Development Centre sign agreement

Denise Stevens and Martin Riordan

TDA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the VET Development Centre (VDC) to strengthen ties between the two organisations and align activities that support VET workforce development.

Previous collaborative activities include Thought Leaders events in Melbourne and Sydney, support by the VDC for two recent TDA Conferences (Emerging Leaders workshops) and participation in TDA study tours.

It was signed by the CEO of VDC, Denise Stevens and the CEO of TDA, Martin Riordan. The intent of the MoU is to consider further opportunities for professional development under new governance changes impacting TAFE Institutes.

Industry Innovation Scholarship open under AVETRA research partnership with TDA

TDA and AVETRA recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster innovation and applied research in TAFE.

The first initiative under the MOU, the AFE Innovation Scholarship is now open for applications.

It will provide $6,000 to an individual or group of TAFE practitioners to investigate innovative ways to meet industry or community skill needs. The outcomes will inform new practices and partnership models for TAFE and specific industry or community sectors.

The Scholarship supports TDA’s Strategic Plan to position TAFE in a competitive training market and AVETRA’s strong commitment to the development of research in vocational education and training nationally.

Applications which contain industry co-sponsorship contributions to the industry research topics are encouraged.

Cross sectoral partnerships forum

The Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) is holding its 2nd annual one day forum on how to construct relationships between universities, TAFE and the private sector in Brisbane, March 12.

The issue of pathways, articulation and credit transfer in tertiary education will be the focus of expert presentations from three practitioners:

  • Di Paez, Project Manager, AUSTEPnet , the University of Southern Queensland.
  • Susanne Serada, Manager Higher Education at Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE
  • Mary Hassard, Griffith University.

Feedback required on community service and health qualifications

TDA members are reminded of a meeting scheduled for tomorrow of the Direct Client Care and Support Industry Reference Group.

It is a very short timeframe, but TDA is seeking feedback ahead of the meeting on draft Direct Client Care and Support qualifications.

Any feedback will be provided direct to tomorrow’s meeting. There will also be an opportunity to provide feedback at the public review period but it will be harder to affect changes at that stage.
