Queensland Government approves ‘dual sector’ for Central Queensland TAFE and University

The Queensland government has approved an agreement for Central Queensland Institute of TAFE (CQIT) to form a ‘dual sector’ institution with Central Queensland University (CQU), creating Australia’s sixth dual sector university.

A CQU/CQIT institution was originally proposed under a Commonwealth Structural Adjustment Fund over a year ago, but remained pending by the Queensland Government. The agreement proposes, rather than a university take-over of TAFE, a new style of course integration will be designed by the incoming Executive.

“This decision will provide the Central Queensland community with access to a quality education provider, delivering a full range of programs to meet the skills needs of the region,” said Queensland Minister for Education, Training and Employment, John-Paul Langbroek.

As part of the merger, CQU will take responsibility for the TAFE’s six campuses at Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Biloela, Yeppoon and Emerald and its other six centres of operation at Clermont, Barcaldine, Blackwater, Moranbah, Dysart and the Trade Training Centre under construction at Ooralea in Mackay.

Data tracks students choosing to up-skill in response to job market

The announcement was made by WorldSkills Deputy Chair, Brian Wexham, at a retirement ceremony for Mr Collyer, as outgoing Managing Director of Polytechnic West.

WorldSkills Australia is considering holding its National Competition in Western Australia. Mr Wexham commented that Wayne's considerable experience, knowledge and connections in WA would be of great value in successfully bringing the competition to Perth.

The retirement celebrations for Mr Collyer included tributes from Chief Executive of TDA, Martin Riordan, newly-elected TDA Board member for WA, Neil Fernandes, and senior staff and industry officials.

TDA paid tribute to Wayne Collyer’s work across the WA and Queensland TAFE systems, representing key issues on Commonwealth policy inquiries, including apprenticeships, skilled migration, student visas, and emerging issues in the WA resources industry.

TDA nominees on TEQSA’s Expert Reference Groups

TDA would like to congratulate those TAFE executives selected to sit on TEQSA Reference Groups: Bruce Mackenzie (Regulatory Risk), Professor Ann Jones (Regulation and Quality Assessment), and Dr Amanda Torr (Information Collection).

In September, TEQSA invited TDA to nominate members to sit on three Reference Groups: Information Collection; Regulatory Risk and Regulation and Quality Assessment.

In the letter of invitation, TEQSA Chief Commissioner, Dr Carol Nicoll PSM, made clear that while members of the group are expected to contribute to robust discussions on these areas of interest, the nominees are not expected to represent or replace sector consultation, or have a role in regulatory decision making.

TDA thanks the members that allowed their names to be put forward to TEQSA.
