Baird Review provides new direction for international education

Greater access to information and more scrupulous regulation is needed to support international students according to the final report of the Baird review into Australia’s international education industry.

The report, Stronger, simpler, smarter ESOS: supporting international students, has been welcomed by TDA, which said it, “laid out a solid framework to overcome major issues that have threatened Australia’s reputation for quality international education”.

Among the recommendations, TDA welcomed the establishment of a single Tuition Protection Service, however it says that as TAFE Institutes represent no risk to international students, they should not have to subsidise the operations of private colleges.

TDA also said the recommendation of tighter industry regulation is well overdue however to be effective, the new arrangements would need to be rigorously enforced.
